The Sarah Thorne Theatre Club is a theatre company based at the Memorial Theatre in Broadstairs, East Kent. The theatre is not far from Margate, where Sarah Thorne took over the running of her father’s theatre company.
The Sarah Thorne Theatre is a community interest company that was formed to bring quality theatrical productions and music to the East Kent area. The company registered their name in 2008 and operated under the name Sarah Thorne Theatre Club from July 2008 to November 2013. It then changed its name to the Sarah Thorne Theatre Company, and they still operate under that name today.
The Memorial Theatre was built after World War II, in 1950, as a memorial to men and women from the area who lost their lives in the war. It seats 200 people. It operated as a popular small venue for a number of years, but slowly started to deteriorate. It then had a second life as a lecture theatre for Hilderstone College, where the building is situated. In 2007, the Sarah Thorne Theatre Club was formed, and they gave new life to the theatre when they took occupancy. The building belongs to the Kent County Council who also maintains the building. As a multi-use venue, it operates as a theatre on weekends and an educational holiday destination and is used by Kent Adult Education during weekdays.
The Sarah Thorne Theatre Company presents a wide variety of performances every year. The highlight of the calendar is undoubtedly the annual pantomime in December, during their Autumn season. Plays and other theatrical performances make up only a fraction of the entertainment at the venue. There are also magic and comedy shows and live music. Classical music is also well represented, with opera, chamber music, and a symphony orchestra gracing the stage frequently.
